Welcome to Year 1
The teachers in Year 1 are:
Miss Samantha Farrall-1F Miss Gemma McMullen-1M Mr Bradley Reed-1R
Year Group: 1
Term: Summer 2
In English, we will be exploring stories relating to the oceans section of our topic and focus on stories with whales. We will create our own fantasy story and develop our understanding of how to write a letter including all of the features of a letter. We will also be practising the skills we want our children to embed in their writing, such as: full stops, capital letters, adjectives and conjunctions (and, but, so, because) and cursive handwriting.
In Maths, we will work towards securing our knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as well as our knowledge of time and properties of 3D shapes. We will also have a large focus on developing our reasoning skills this half term in preparation for Year 2.
In Computing, we will be creating an electronic leaflet about St Lucia using the iPads and Purple Mash.
In PSHE, we will be looking at how we grow and change.
In RE, we will be looking at Judaism and Jewish Festivals.
In Science, we will be learning about animals that live in the ocean and looking at their habitat as well as exploring the ocean food chain!
In Topic, we will be focusing on the island of St Lucia. Children will design and make a carnival head dress and learn some Caribbean music. We will also be comparing St Lucia to England and considering how the homes, transport and weather is different.
Our PE days are Monday and Wednesday for 1F, Tuesday and Friday for 1M and Monday and Friday for 1R. Please make sure your child has their PE kit in school on these days.
Children will change their books every Monday and Thursday. Please ensure that you provide your child with their book to school on these days. It is vital that your child completes their daily 10 minutes of reading and provides the class teacher with a book to change twice weekly.
Spellings will be assessed every Friday with the children. If you have not received your child’s spellings please talk to their class teacher.
