Welcome to Year 1

Term: Summer 2

In English, at the beginning of the term we will be taking part in a whole school project using the video ‘Adrift’ as the stimulus for our writing we will be retelling the story in a narrative form. We will also be reading ‘The Storm Whale’ and writing our own version of the story, whilst working towards securing the use of expanded noun phrases to describe. We will then be reading ‘Greenpeace’ and developing our letter writing skills. We will continue to develop our cursive handwriting and will be developing our reading of tricky words.

In Maths, we will be introducing money and will be learning to recognise the value of different coins and notes, as well has how to use money in a real life context.  We will also develop our understanding of height and length. We will continue to develop our understanding of place value and work towards securing our knowledge of 3D shapes. During our fractions lessons we will be revisiting halves and quarters of shapes and numbers. 

In Science, we will be developing our understanding of life under the sea. We will revisit animal classifications and will learn about the food chain as well as finding out about coral reefs. 

In PSHE, we will discuss how to be a good friend and act positively around others. In RE, we will learn about Jewish festivals and celebrations. In DT, we will be creating out own exciting carnival head dresses.

In our Geography sessions, we will be comparing two islands – the UK and St Lucia. We will find out what similarities and differences each island has including carnivals, the weather, types of jobs and forms of transport.

In Computing, we will be furthering our knowledge of E-safety. We will also be gathering facts and images from a range of websites to create an information page all about St Lucia.
